Lighthouse club is a not for profit we have NO PAID STAFF , NO OFFICE SPACE it is run by volunteer’s only so every cent raised will go to the people who need it.

Beneficiary Update – Current Welfare Support

From the Monkey Survey carried out last year there was very justifiably a call for more information regarding details of the provisions for assistance to those in need which are funded by the Club from your subscriptions and donations.

 
It is our intention to provide regular updates on this, starting from now !

 
 Education Assistance :
Currently we are supporting 6 No students from NUS who are from needy families and want to study construction related subjects. These students have been supported by a $45,000 Bursary from our funds which has been paid in three annual tranches, the last and final one being paid in 2011. The great
advantage of this scheme is that every dollar donated by the Lighthouse Club is matched by an equal amount from the overnment. These students are now all successfully completing the third of their four year courses, with progress being closely monitored by the University on our behalf. We have been requested by the University to start a further Bursary this year and are considering that request.

 
 Family Support :
We have been supporting three families over the past several years whilst their children are completing their education. The breadwinners in these families have either been killed in ndustrial accidents or have died as a result of illnesses. The total amount of that support is currently S1,600 a month, but will shortly increase ( see below ). The circumstances of these families are reviewed annually and adjustments to our levels of support are made where appropriate to their needs. We are also in the process of seeking aid from Regional Funds in Hong Kong to support the education of two children from a family in India whose father was recently killed in an industrial accident in Singapore.

 
 Incidental Cases of Need :
In additions to our “regular” cases of support we have numerous isolated cases of assistance to help the short term needs of afflicted persons and families. In the past this has included several serious illness cases ( not always with a successful outcome, unfortunately, but at least we have been able to provide some comfort and protection from financial difficulties ). These have included a serious eye cancer in a 1 year old child ( we continue to monitor this case ), a heart pacemaker replacement, and several other medical predicaments. We have also assisted several families in short term difficulties following a bereavement, including the repatriation of the bodies, or where accidents have rendered the victim unable to work for a period, some short term assistance.

 Current Cases :
In addition to the above cases we are currently arranging to provide long term support for a recently bereaved family with an income of less than $1,000 per month to support two hildren, their mother and their grandmother. The first payment to this family will be made shortly. Another case we have committed to support is medical expense assistance to a family whose 4 year old daughter has to under go a heart operation. We shall continue to monitor the needs of this family also. A further two cases we are investigating involve workers who have not been able to work for a time due to industrial accidents.

 

The above is a short summary of the more recent cases we have or are dealing with. Often we experience great difficulty in providing the help that is needed due to fear from the victims that their insurance claims may be jeopardised or simply because they are too proud to be seen to be accepting assistance.

 

In all these cases we do carry out due diligence to ensure that the circumstances are indeed genuine, and are also seeking help and where appropriate advice from MOM to locate persons in need.
Please therefore think of these people when you are considering supporting our events or are being gently hassled to make a contribution in the collection bucket at our GetTogethers or other functions, while you are drinking your beer kindly donated by our generous sponsors ! They would rather be standing beside you than receiving our aid!!

I am negotiating to get a block booking for the final day – I have asked if they can cordon an area off for us to protect the other spectators! More on this later in the year.
